This southern home was designed to bring simplicity into the lives of our clients, who we worked with 25 years ago renovating their Connecticut home. Making this home a good neighbor to this South Carolina community was a high priority. The low slung metal roofs on the garage in front, screened porch and cabana in the back compliment the simple forms of the low-slung roof pitches in the neighborhood. The home rises in the center to provide for the family’s main living areas. The large windows allow the sunlight to flood the indoors with natural light. This home, while luxurious, is designed to promote a life of ease, with many bonuses to comfortably entertain family and friends!
The barn-inspired 4-bay garage located in the mountains of New Hampshire not only consists of garages and car washing capabilities, it also provides a spacious apartment with wood vaulted ceilings, spacious rooms and kitchen for comfortable living. So wash the mud off your cars and boots and sit back and enjoy the mountainous views!
This home features the soul of a traditional Korean home, or “Hanok.” Our clients’ purchased their neighboring lot with the remnants of a burned down house where we conceived an abstracted hanok featuring lines of water elements (sunken bath, pool…), fire elements (stove, fire pit…), and earth elements (greenhouse, outdoor dining sunken in a veggie garden…). The courtyard is embraced by a dojang (Korean martial art’s studio) on the south, a bridged entry to the Hanok on the west, and a garage and carport to the north. Much care was taken to incorporate the Hanok into the landscape. We were conscious of how the Hanok framed the sky. This Hanok was designed to be a net zero home featuring ICF (insulated concrete forms), Tesla solar roof and geothermal heating and cooling.
Note how the Hanok frames the sky.
